Ability to equalize

I made a ranking about the ability of scoring or not conceding an equalizer.
The data are all from the current season, and refers to the domestic leagues of England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
I took them from soccerstats.com

The first table refers to the ability to score an equalizer after having conceded a goal that gave the lead to the opponent.
I took into consideration only the teams who conceded a "leading goal" to the opponent a number of times equal at least to the 66% of the matches played.
MP = matches played
GGLO = number of goals that gave the lead to the opponents
EGS = number of equalizer goals scored by the team
ATE = ability to equalize (ratio between EGS and GGLO)

For example, Inter Milan played 16 matches this season, conceding 14 times a goal that gave the lead to their opponents, and 9 times they were able to equalize it. Their ability to equalize is then 64,29% (9/14).

The second table is about the ability to not conceding an equalizer after having taken the lead.
I took into consideration only the teams who scored a "leading goal" a number of times equal at least to the 66% of the matches played.
MP = matches played
GGL = number of goals that gave the lead to the team
EGC = number of equalizer goals conceded to the opponent
OATE = opponent's ability to equalize (ratio between EGC and GGL)

Real Madrid played 15 games, scored 15 "leading goals" and conceded only 2 equalizers to their opponents, for an OATE of 13.33% (2/15). When they take the lead of a match, they hardly lose it.

Please note that a team could score or concede more than one "leading goal" and/or equalizer per game. Example: team A vs team B; team A scores the first goal of the match, going on 1-0; then team B equalizes to 1-1; then team A scores the 2-1, and team B scores the final 2-2. In this match, team A scored 2 goals that gave them the lead, and conceded 2 equalizers; viceversa for the team B, who scored 2 equalizers and conceded 2 goals that gave the lead to the opponent.

MP = partite giocate

MP = partite giocate

Scoring trends

In the following table there are the goals scored per game in the main 10 European leagues, considering the last 5 seasons plus the current one until the last weekend's matches (included).
You can also see the trend for each league.

Dutch Eredivisie is the league where most goals per game are scored every season.
This season, England and Spain have a decrease compared to all the previous 5 years.
Belgium and Portugal are the only ones that have an increment in respect to the last season.

Which are the most prolific teams at the beginning and at the end of the match?

Considering the 10 main European leagues, these are the clubs who scored the most in the injury time (after 90th minute):
Arsenal (ENG, 5 goals)
Porto (POR, 4)
Espanyol (ESP, 4)
Lazio (ITA, 3)
Roma (ITA, 3)
Lyon (FRA, 3)
Marseille (FRA, 3)
Monaco (FRA, 3)
Sporting CP (POR, 3)

These are the ones who scored the most in the first 15 minutes of the match:
Valencia (ESP, 9 goals)
Wolfsburg (GER, 8)
Chelsea (ENG, 7)
Benfica (POR, 7)
Moenchengladbach (GER, 7)
Stoke City (ENG, 6)
Sporting CP (POR, 6)
Real Madrid (ESP, 6)

As you can see, Sporting CP are present in both the rankings; they have a curious distribution of goals:
1-15: 6 goals
16-30: 1
31-45: 2
46-60: 3
61-75: 6
76-90: 4
>90: 3
They score very few goals between 16th and 60th minute, but they balance scoring more in the rest of the match, injury time included.

Precedents in the Champions League round of 16

In the round of 16 there will be 3 unprecedented matches: Shakhtar Donetsk-Bayern MunichArsenal-Monaco and Basel-Porto.

Three matches were played only once in the past. Two of them were played last year in the same round: Manchester City - Barcelona (Barcelona won 2-0 in Manchester and 2-1 at home) and Schalke 04 - Real Madrid (Real dominated 6-1 and 3-1).

Also Bayer Leverkusen - Atlético Madrid was played just once, in 2010-2011 Group Stage: both matches ended 1-1.

Paris SG and Chelsea played against each other twice, in 2004-2005 and 2013-2014. The total balance sees 2 wins for Chelsea, 1 for PSG and a draw. Last year they played the quarter-final: Chelsea lost 1-3 in Paris and then won 2-0 at home, managing to go through.

Juventus and Borussia Dortmund confronted each other 4 times, with a total of 7 matches played: the balance is in favour of Juventus, with 4 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses. However, Borussia won 3-1 the most important one: the CL final in 1996-1997; this is also the last match played between these two clubs.

European Cups: Legia Warsaw is the best team after the Group Stage

According to the ECRS, after the Group Stage Legia Warsaw* (Poland) kept the lead of the ranking, with 325,83 points.
At the second place, Dynamo Moscow (Russia) gained a couple of points and now they have 322,06.
At the third place, with 289,95 points, we find Villareal (Spain).

The best team in Champions League is Porto (Portugal), at 5th overall place with 278,58 points.

The worst team still in the competition is Liverpool (England), who are in the 122nd position, with 83,99 points.

The complete ranking is here.

* Please note: Legia Warsaw was punished by UEFA for fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 second leg's win over Celtic in the third qualifying round. I decided to consider it as a 0-3 lost, as stated by the official UEFA sentence.

Most efficient teams in keeping an advantage and in coming back

I checked which are the most efficient teams in winning games after they scored the first goal.

In the tables below there are the top 10 (considering the main 6 European leagues) for the last and the current season.
The FTS/total field indicates how many times the team scored first on the total of the matches played (only in the domestic league).
The percentage is simply the ratio between these two numbers.
The W D L fields shows how the matches ended for that team, and the avg pts are the average points made by the team on those matches.
For the ranking to be more consistent, I considered only the teams that scored the first goal in at least half of the games played.

You can see that in this season there are 4 teams that always won the matches which they scored first in.

I did the same thing for the teams whose opponent scored first, to see which are the best teams in coming back after having conceded the first goal of the match.
The fields are as above, with the difference that here are considered the matches which the opponent scored first in.

Goal timing in 6 European Leagues

This table shows the distribution of the goals scored this season in the 6 main European leagues.
I have divided the matches in 15 minutes segments, but I decided to separate the goals scored in the injury time after the 90th minute, to get a more balanced result (otherwise too many goals seemed to be scored between the 75th and the 90th).
The goals scored in the first half injury time are counted inside the "31-45" segment, but they shouldn't be too many and don't shift the distribution.
The green cells indicate the highest percentage (for that nation), while the red cells are the lowest.

Nation 1-15 16-30 31-45 46-60 61-75 76-90 >90 Total of goals
England 13,85% 14,46% 14,46% 15,08% 19,08% 18,15% 4,92% 325
France 12,07% 12,69% 17,96% 16,72% 17,96% 18,27% 4,33% 323
Germany 14,68% 13,65% 17,06% 17,41% 15,36% 18,77% 3,07% 293
Italy 13,07% 17,97% 18,30% 14,05% 15,69% 17,32% 3,59% 306
Portugal 13,97% 13,97% 14,85% 17,03% 17,90% 19,21% 3,06% 229
Spain 11,88% 12,19% 20,63% 14,06% 16,88% 18,44% 5,94% 320

It is clear that most of the goals are scored in the last 15 minutes of the two halves of the match. Very few are scored in the first 15 minutes.
A good percentage of goals are scored in the injury time, especially in Spain and England.

Goal timing in the English Premier League

Clicking the image above you can see a data visualization on the timing of goals in the English Premier League in this season, considering segments of 15 minutes each.

At this moment, before the 12th matchday, 22,59% of the goals were scored in the last 15 minutes, and 42,19% in the last 30 (always including the injury time).

The record of goals scored in one segment belongs to Manchester City, who so far scored 8 times in the last 15 minutes (including the injury time).
Aston Villa never scored in the last 30 minutes, as Newcastle in the first 30.

In the visualization you will find the charts about goals scored, goals conceded, the difference (scored - conceded) and the sum (scored + conceded) of goals for each team and each segment.

The importance of scoring first

I checked the last five seasons in the main 6 European leagues (England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain) to see how strong is the correlation between the points made and a score linked to the number of times that a team scored first in a match.

To calculate this second score, that I call "First to score efficiency", I gave 1 point for a match where the team scored first, 0,5 points for a match ended 0-0, and then I calculate (score + (n° of matchdays)) / (n° of matchdays * 2).

For example, for the English Premier League, the formula is (score + 38) / 76.
This score thus goes from a minimum of 0,5 (if the team never scored the first goal of the match) to a maximum of 1 (if the team scored the first goal in all the matches).

At this link you can see an interactive chart about it.

These are the correlations:

They are almost all in the same range (0,80-0,93), with few exceptions.
The most remarkable is the German 2010-2011 season, with a correlation of only 0,6621.
In that season there were some teams that had very different results between the "First to score efficiency" and the number of points made. In particular:
Mainz scored first in only 13 matches (out of 34), but ended 5th in the league: they won 7 games after that the opponent scored first;
- three teams won less than 50% of the matches they scored first in: Hoffenheim won 8 out of 20, Wolfsburg 8 out of 17, Moenchengladbach 9 out of 19. All these three teams had an efficiency score around 0.80 (quite high), but ended respectively at the 11th, 15th and 16th place in the table.

The highest correlation overall (0,9605) is the one of Barcelona in 2009/2010, when they had an efficiency score of 35 (out of 38), scoring 99 points.
The lowest (0,6083) is the one of last season's Paços de Ferreira: they had an efficiency score of only 6.5 (out of 30), however scoring 24 points at the end of the season.

The longest streak belongs to, again, 2009-2010's Barcelona, with a series of 14 matches where they scored first (from the 8th to the 21st matchday). Counting also the 0-0 draws, the streak stretches to 21 matches (from 1st to 21st) without conceding the first goal to the opponent.

In particolare:

Domestic ranking as of 13 November 2014

I made the first ranking of this season according to the Domestic Leagues Ranking System.
As explained in the linked post, this system takes into account the matches played in the 10 main European leagues, with the points made, the goals scored and conceded by each team, and the strength of the league.

These are the best ten teams as of today:

Domestic Leagues Ranking System

I created a system to evaluate the performances of the European teams in their own domestic leagues.
I take the average points made (PpG), average goals scored (AGS) and average goals conceded (AGC), calculating this formula: PpG + (AGS-AGC)/2,5
This score is then multiplied by 1,5.

To consider also the strength of each league, I multiply the result by two coefficients:
1) The external coefficient is the national coefficient (NC), that is based on the performances of the teams in the UEFA Cups in the last three years. The system to calculate the NC is explained on this post.
2) The internal coefficient is calculated considering, for each season, the 25th and 75th percentile of the points made per single game by all the teams. These two numbers are the points per game needed by a team to be, respectively, in the top 75% or in the top 25% of the table; therefore they are (roughly) the points needed to avoid the relegation or to partecipate in the Europa League. Then these two values are divided by the number of matches played in that league, and multiplied to obtain only one number.

The final score is then equal to (team's score) * (external coefficient) * (internal coefficient)

A team gets a final bonus of 2% if they are at the first position of the league.

Example
Let’s see how to calculate the score of Liverpool, as of today 9 November 2014.
Liverpool played 11 matches in the Premier League, gaining 14 points, scoring 14 goals and conceding 15.
The result of PpG + (AGS-AGC)/2,5 formula is ~1,236.
This is then multiplied by 1,5 obtaining a score of ~1,85.

The strength of the Premier League is calculated as follows.
The external coefficient of England is 47,38 (it takes into account the results of the English clubs in the European Cups in the last three seasons, as explained in this post).
To calculate the internal coefficient, I calculate the 25th and 75th percentile of the points per game made in the Premier League in the last three seasons, which are respectively ~1,031 and ~1,805. They are multiplied to obtain the internal coefficient of the English Premier League, which is ~1,86.
The external and internal coefficients are multiplied to obtain the final coefficient of the Premier League: 47,38 * ~1,86 = ~88,14.

The score of Liverpool at this point of the season is then ~1,85 * ~88,14 = 163,46 (rounded).

Of course, the league coefficients (both external and internal) are set at the beginning of the season and they won’t change, since they are calculated on the results of the previous three years.
On the contrary, the score of each team changes every match they play.

If it happens that there is at least one team with a negative score, I adjust the points of all teams in this way: the best score remains unchanged, while the worst is converted to 1, and all the other scores are adjusted proportionally. In this way, the worst teams gain more points in the ranking, while the best teams gain few points (the first team gains no points).
In any case, the positions in the ranking don't change.
This is the formula to make the adjustment (TS = team score, BS = best score, WS = worst score): TS + ((1-WS)/(BS-WS))*(BS-TS).
